John and Martha King: Pioneers of Aviation Education 👨‍✈️📖👩‍✈️

It wouldn’t be a proper Aviation Appreciation series without giving a shout out to two of the most famous names in aviation education, would it?

Introduction:

John and Martha King stand as exemplars of dedication and innovation in the field of aviation education. Their combined passion for flying and commitment to excellence have propelled them to the forefront of the aviation industry, where they have earned widespread acclaim for their contributions to pilot training and safety.

For John, aviation became a lifelong fascination at a young age. His father owned a small plane growing up and John flew with him often. Once John was old enough, he took flying lessons. He found himself captivated by the grace and freedom of flight.

Martha, in contrast, had no interest in aviation as a child. Her father was in the U.S. Army Air Forces and was in charge of training the pilots at the base he was assigned to. While not interested in aviation in her younger years, she was certainly surrounded by it.

In 1963, Martha’s older sister introduced her to John King. The two were both attending Indiana University in Bloomington. They married in 1965.

Early Business Ventures & King Schools Introduction:

John and Martha went into business together, running a truck servicing business that performed oil changes and lubrication for fleets of trucks. However, when the OPEC energy embargo hit in 1973, the business disintegrated and they went bankrupt.

They decided to turn a passion for aviation into a serious business. They purchased a Cherokee 140 and took flying lessons together. Funnily enough, the two received their private pilot certificates only two days apart!

In 1974, the two videotaped the first lesson for King Schools, in the spare bedroom of their home in Southern California. Just a basic lecture with some simple tools including a model airplane.

In 1975, fueled by their shared passion and a desire to make a lasting impact on aviation education, John and Martha embarked on a groundbreaking venture: officially founding of King Schools. Recognizing the need for accessible and comprehensive training materials in the aviation industry, they set out to revolutionize the way pilots learn and train. Their vision was simple yet profound: to empower any aspiring pilots with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to navigate the skies safely and proficiently.
